Patrick’s expert guest was Professor Jaichand, Head – School of Law, University of Witwatersrand. Professor Jaichand,spoke about the restructuring of the LLB degree at Wits. It is an interesting development and has some constitutional law implications, indirectly, because, to use his words, it will assist in producing lawyers “who understand their social function and duty”. He will address this issue and his view that we are producing legal technicians rather than lawyers. He will also look at the long term consequence of this change and whether it will contribute to making real the constitutional right people have to representation, particularly the poor.
